Adults Beginning the Journey of Healing
Parents, family members, or care givers of children impacted by family or neighborhood trauma, abuse, and violence can also be affected by their own trauma. Therefore, caring for children who have experienced trauma may not only be a stressful experience but may compound our own personal unresolved trauma. We know today that adults who have not begun to take care of their own trauma issues usually don’t have the patience or the capacity to care for their hurting children. Hurting adults can’t generally care for hurting children. This session will give us the courage to begin our work of healing so that we can be available to help our children heal.

Merriam Park Community School Bear Dens
Relationships! Relationships! Relationships!

They are the cornerstone of any successful school and the way a school fosters these relationships varies based on its culture. Merriam Park Community School in Merriam, Kansas has instituted our Bear Dens, cross grade level groupings, and Bearz II Men, a program designed to build relationships with the young men in our 6th grade. These programs have had a positive effect on not only our school culture but our community as well.

In this breakout session, we'll discuss the process of beginning a similar outreach opportunity in your building. The discussion will cover all facets from lesson suggestions, schedules, who is involved, where Merriam Park is heading with them in the future, and the challenges we have faced.  Participants will be granted access to all of our materials and have the opportunity to add their own ideas into this shared resource for all to use!

Transforming a School
During this session, we'll discuss how a Title I school was transformed. We went from a building with over 80 suspensions, high staff turnover, a constant stream of students sent to the office, and poor community perception to a school providing civic engagement opportunities, aligned with community partnerships, with no staff turnover, with a trauma responsive culture, and only eight suspensions for the year. It continues to be a challenge but our kids and staff deserve a high quality educational environment! Come find out how we did it.

The Importance of Involving Parents in Their Child's Education
Family involvement is a two-way street. If we expect parents to be actively involved in the educational lives of their children, we must first make them feel welcome in the school environment. This can be achieved by leveling the playing field when it comes to what is best for each student entrusted to our care. In this session, we will explore strategies for engaging parents before the school year ever begins and how to maintain those relationships long after the student has left your classroom.

Developing a Trauma Informed Classroom
As an educator, I value my individuality and my autonomy.  And I say over and over again . . . "We don't have standardized kids." Learning how to adapt the classroom to meet the needs of all the students and to build a "safe place" to learn and grow takes time. It also takes a large measure of being able to allow myself to just try something realizing that it might not work and I might need to try something different. It's not enough to assume that kids "know better" or that all kids will gain control of their bodies through the same cookie cutter solution. Different solutions work for different kids. I am learning to try as many of the tricks and tools as I can and to keep trying different things until I find something that works.

Come and learn what's worked for me and share what has worked for you!

Expression, Experience, and Executive Function for Educational Success
Trauma and chronic stress associated with poverty affect children’s bodies and brains, setting them on a path of academic struggle even before they start elementary school. Therefore, the time to build resilience and lay the foundation for academic success is during early childhood with activities that build executive function and pre-literacy skills. This session will examine early childhood activities and resources for counteracting the effects of trauma and stress, thus leveling the academic playing field and impacting the quality of life factors.

The Profoundness of Self-Care
During every pre-flight safety briefing, the flight attendant will remind us that if there is a loss of cabin pressure we need to put on our own oxygen mask first before placing the oxygen mask on our children. The same rule also applies as an adult care giver. If we put the oxygen mask on our children first, we may run out of oxygen and not be available when we are needed the most. Self-care follows the same theme. We have to take care of ourselves first, then take of our children. This session will focus on the importance of self-care and how to maintain self-care in a busy culture.

Once Upon a Time is Now: The Power of Storytelling to Guide and Heal
"Fairy tales are more than true - not because they tell us that dragons exist but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten." Neil Gaiman

Stories contain the wisdom of cultures and have been used to teach and heal for centuries before books and traditional education.  Stories, especially traditional  folk tales, provide models for problem solving and dealing with fear. Beyond cautionary tales and fables, traditional tales promote the values of persistence and kindness, they give us hope. Storytelling in its simplest form provides a live, personal connection and promotes imagination, possibility thinking, and gives listeners a vicarious experience of once upon a time.

This presentation will include a short demonstration, application ideas, and a bibliography of traditional tales to use in school and community settings.

Resilience film screening
Viewing of movie Resilience with facilitated conversation.

Researchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. As the new documentary Resilience reveals, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. Resilience, however, also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics, education, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose.

From the Amygdala to the Pre-frontal Cortex (Double Session)
Children who have grown up in poverty and/or with significant traumatic situations have brains who have trouble communicating out of the fight/flight/freeze amygdala part of the brain into the rational, executive functioning prefrontal cortex of the brain. And how that manifests in classrooms and life is often a frustration for all. But the very framework of Project/Problem Based Learning helps move those children's (and adults') brains forward, literally. Come learn more about how we can do non-invasive brain surgery to repair and heal the damage for a more satisfying life.

A Study Guide to Relationships with Students Experiencing Poverty & Trauma (Double Session)
Research teaches us that healing happens in the context of our relationships with others and is the foundation in responding to students who have experienced both poverty and trauma. This presentation will focus on the progression of the relationships we have with students as we identify their hidden rules, resiliency factors, coping strategies, and triggers in each stage.  All of which we will utilize to help raise student awareness and develop a plan to self-regulate both in and out of school.  A key component of this process will also be recognizing and embracing our own limitations and the need to build a trusted community network to strengthen our own resiliency and effectiveness.

The Cost of Caring
Vicarious trauma affects teachers’ brains in much the same way that it affects their students’. Yet many teachers are never explicitly taught how to help students who have experienced trauma, let alone address the toll it takes on their own health and personal lives. In this session we will explore coping strategies for dealing with vicarious trauma. How can we care, and not cost our own health and life satisfaction in the process?

In The Zone
We know when our students are upset, stressed, or worried, they are not ready to learn. This year is the third full year that Derby Hills elementary teachers will be implementing the Zones of Regulation in their classroom. Derby Hills teachers, Brenna Brownlee and Misti Dailey, will share how they teach self-regulation to their students and incorporate the Zones of Regulation into their day. There is great power in understanding where our students are and where we are emotionally. This session will help participants unpack the treasure of Social and Emotional Learning that is experienced with Zones of Regulation both in the classroom and at a building level!

Scoring Your Students ACEs to Inform
One of the first steps in becoming a Trauma-Informed school and educator is understanding what the Adverse Childhood Experience study is, how it originated, and what the correlations to behavior and health are from its findings. During this session, you will learn what the ACE’s study is and what the correlations are between Adverse Childhood Experiences and adult health outcomes. You will also learn how ACEs information can be used in the educational setting. We will also highlight how you can score a student’s ACE and then use that information to guide you on how to care for that student. Finally, we will discuss how you can use this data to provide substance and clarity for local school boards in their decision-making process for the need for adding school counselors and social workers.

Trauma-Informed Community Schools
When it comes to building a whole school environment where students thrive All Means ALL but schools can't do this alone, it takes a community. Join me for this session exploring the trauma-informed community school model as a way to build resilience and take a 'whole school, whole community' approach. We will look at the pillars and frameworks for the equally powerful trauma-informed and community school models to explore how they mutually reinforce and support each other. We will look at exemplars from public schools across the country to understand best practices and spark ideas. Participants will have the opportunity to understand what they are already doing that fits within this model, identify gaps, and prioritize their next steps.

Youth Inspiring Cross-Social Connections
Are you interested in hearing how a group of youth worked to change culture within their city?

The McPherson High School Youth Advisory Council (YAC) wanted to bring awareness to the importance of cross-social connections among their classmates. To facilitate this process, they planned and implemented a summit in September to collaborate with students within the city to address: "What does our school look like when we have good cross-cultural connections?"

We'll share details and highlight strategies for replicating the process in your school and community!
